About the Society

Founded on 13 April 1934, the Scottish Gaelic Texts Society was created to preserve and share Scotland’s Gaelic literary heritage. At the Society’s first meeting, Prof. William J. Watson—Professor of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh—set out its purpose:

to provide the publication of texts in the Scottish Gaelic language, accompanied by such introductions, English translations, glossaries and notes as may be deemed desirable.

That mission remains at the heart of everything we do today: publishing Scottish Gaelic texts with the scholarly support that helps readers, learners, and researchers engage with them fully.
